Musicologist

Today, I was lucky enough to have the chance to listen to this amazing man speak about the traditional Irish music. As it turns out, if the Irish weren't taken into slavery with black people, we wouldn't have most of the music we have today. I had no idea and truthfully, I had no idea that the Irish were forced to be slaves. Anyway, it was truly amazing. I got the names of some great Irish musicians that I will have to check out. Tomorrow night, there is traditional Irish music at a local pub that I plan to check out. I hoping for a scene right out of P.S. I love you but at the very least, the music should be wonderful.

I also want to inform everyone that I do in fact have the rest of my luggage. I smell much better these days. I was very grateful for the 60 degree temp. or I could have smelled much worse. I am still hungry though. Cheerios are not like Cheerios in the states and I can hardly find chips (crisps) I like! Today I opted for the salt and vinegar and that was much better than the onion crisps I had yesterday. Alexis will be happy to know that I tried Fanta soda yesterday. I swear my body will reject anything that is remotely healthy (it's made with real juice here and no high fructose corn syrup). I was not feeling well last night or this morning but I am over it and will make better choices until I get used to the ridiculously healthy food they eat here. I swear that I cannot find bread without twigs in it and everything else is locally grown, obviously different than the states.

The food issue...
I had completely forgot about your issues regarding food and how that might impact your trip.
I do have to laugh, though, that your body is rejecting the healthier food found in Ireland. It speaks volumes to how we eat here in the states...
HOPEFULLY you will find something yummy for your tummy in the next six weeks. OTHERWISE this could also turn out to be a diet/starvation journey of a lifetime! Let's hope not!
On another issue, Paige was completely correct in reporting the news for Channel 5. How is an overweight cat newsworthy? SERIOUSLY! I was going to stay up to watch this "news", but I was too tired to do so. I know they claim to be the first news channel of Minnesota, but perhaps it's time to call it quits.

Well, all I can say about the food thing is that maybe the universe is trying to tell you to eat a little healthier and it had to send you to Ireland to get the message to you. What do you think? Yeah, I think that theory's total crap, too. Tummy troubles are no fun, so I hope that it will only get better from here on out and that you'll find some delicious-only-found-in-Ireland treat that will make the trip worthwhile in the food department.
Also, I'm secretly hoping Andy will call me before he mows your lawn next time. If so, I will park my lawn chair out on the sidewalk, bring a magazine to read, and sip some lemonade while I enjoy watching the waving and the smiling at your nosy neighbors! What a hoot!
I hope to hear some of this slave music you speak of once you return (that is if you return--do you even have a round trip ticket?). What a well-rounded trip you're on--rocks, water, buses, music--but seriously, where's the art?
Later! Now it's my turn to mow the lawn, but I don't mind since it's sunny and 75 degrees out right now--summer's finally here in MN!

I don't know what the hell Maria's talking about--summer is here? I will know that summer is here when I can where shorts without getting goose bumps from the breeze and the lake goes over 50 degrees. Right now, when you put your feet in the water, it's that cold that goes to the bone in your leg cold. Both my kids are begging me for wetsuits. About the food--I've heard that it takes 4 days to get used to something or get over something. Weirdly, there is no term in our language for 4 days out. Example, we have tomorrow, yesterday and the day after tomorrow, but we have no expression for the 4th day. I've heard that if you can not smoke for 4 days, you can beat the addiction, etc. So Joni--you just have to make it to Day 4! You will never go back to crappy food again. So what are the people like? Are there other artists in residence? Other people your age? How about professors/curators, etc.? Okay! Thinking about you! Waiting for Day 4.

Paige, did you purposely misspell "wear" to "where"? Are you messing with us? Have you been teaching so long that student spelling is now becoming your own? Oh, and I consider it summer when I can have my windows open in the house AND when I drive--I never thought about the lake thing. You'll have to keep us posted on when your summer officially starts for you and your kids.
I'm with Paige, too, give us the scoop on the people there!!

Hey Jo! You are gonna be soooo skinny when you get back! Just think, all that weight you tried to lose by running, you are going to lose in Ireland instead! You are going to make some great artwork because you'll be delusional from not eating!!! It should make for some pretty interesting stuff!!! O.k., now for the debate on summer. I know that St.Cloud is not that far from Fargo, but as far as the weather is going we have not seen sun, yet. My kids are supposed to have soccer and T-ball and all that stuff everyday. Let's just say, they have been rained out more than they have played and when they do play people come with coats and blankets wrapped around them. Does NOT sound like summer to me. Just given my 2 cents take it or leave it. We are supposed to go camping this weekend in South Dakota so I hope that is better. Last time I checked, tents don't hold up so well in rain. ;-) BTW how is the water over there. Can you drink that? And can you pick the twigs out of the bread or at least cover them up with something like peanut butter? You like the crunchy kind of peanut butter anyway, maybe you won't be able to tell the diff. Right? LOL! Good Luck!

P.S. Can I have your clothes when you get back, since they'll be falling off of you?

Oh I almost forgot! You do realize that they drink warm beer in Ireland and it's pretty dark beer, right? Also, if you see Flogging Molly I'm going to be soooo jealous!!!

Maria--that is what happens when you have been teaching for 20 years--I read through it again and still didn't catch it. Next I'll start using the word "sposto". My hope is that after I retire, I'll begin regaining all the spelling I've lost after reading countless papers with spelling probs. But really, can we blame the kids, on Monday, I saw a store called Korner Kuts. Hair style, I believe. Anyway. There is my diatribe on spelling, or lack thereof.

Joni,
Being at an Irish pub in Ireland with live Irish music...sounds perfect!! I will be anxious to see how the night goes. Also, I want you to know I ate an obscene amount of vinegar and salt crisps in Zimbabwe for the same reasons as thats as good as it got sometimes. YOu can always do what I did and just fill up on beer, that was good diet! Enjoy your adventures, even the bad ones, and I'll be tuning in often for updates! take care and enjoy, Gretchen
